7 Technology Questions Everyone Should Know the Answer To
Life these days would not be possible without technology. Technology has become such an integral part of everyday life that operating without it is almost impossible. Many simple, daily tasks involve technology. Some of these tasks include waking up in the morning to an alarm clock, taking hot showers, making tea or coffee, driving to work, using a computer to carry out daily tasks, and turning on the TV.
It is all because of technology that we get to operate on a day to day basis. This is not to say that it is not possible to detach from technology. Many people have been known to go into nature discovery journeys where they completely disconnect from the world and all forms of unnatural things, but even then it is very difficult. However when you find yourself in the position of choosing what gadget or system to use either in your home or place of work, it is important to ask yourself some questions. Here are the 7 important questions to consider about technology:
Will Smart Technology Someday Become Too Smart?
We are constantly inventing smart devices and gadgets including telephones and cars. Some people even have smart houses that respond immediately to commands and have the ability to sense changes such as reduced room temperature thereby closing the windows or increasing the thermostat temperatures. There are cars that are able to auto drive after installation of destination information, and phones that respond as if they too were human. And all this is fascinating and interesting but will technology someday become too smart? Perhaps to the point where all control is lost? And if so, what should be done to prevent this? We should realize that everything has its vices and therefore when it comes to technology, careful and informed decisions have to be made.
Is Automation a Benefit or a Loss?
Automation is almost similar to smart technology. In facts some technologies are smart because they have been automation. This simply means that they can work with minimal to almost none human interference. Automation has allowed huge steps in human life to be made for example in the production industries. It is because of automation that we are able to produce goods in bulk and in shorter amounts of time as compared to when things had to be done manually. This of course is good because it has led to a direct rise in economic growth.
However it is not all rosy in the automated world. With more and more machines and technologies being made in order to help man carry out their day to day activities, man is left with nothing to do save for being lazy and to some extent irrelevant. Many people have lost their jobs due to being replaced with machines and computers while others have said machines doing everything for them so they become lazy. This may lead to increase in the levels of obesity due to reduced physical activities and even loss of thinking capacity. In other words, in as much as technology makes your life easy, try to not be completely dependent because at the end of the day, technology is just artificial.
Is Technology Empowering or Weakening You?
This is one question everyone who indulges in the use of technology should ask themselves. Are you becoming a better person through the use of technology or does it make you vulnerable? For tech guys such as computer geeks, technology challenges their minds to think far and wide in order to come up with more innovations and inventions and this is super. But for the lay man, does continued use of technology make you a better person? The internet for example has made communication all over the world so simple and efficient allowing people to keep in touch despite of the distance.
However some people have taken this and used it for negative purposes such as stalking people, duping innocent guys of their money and even spreading false information. Cyber bullying has also become a rampant and common activity of late due to the freedom of expression on the internet and perhaps the knowledge that nothing can really be done to you. You therefore have to be extremely careful when you are logged in so as not to be a victim or worse still, a perpetrator.
Does Technology Connect or Disconnect Us?
We mentioned earlier that it is because of the internet and gadgets such as the phone and computers that we are able to keep in touch with our loved ones from around the world. And this can be described as a huge milestone in human existence. Nevertheless, you should ask yourself whether you really are connected to people around you.
It is a common feature to see people especially teenagers walking in zombie mode on the streets, in the house and at school, in a slightly hunched back position with their faces glued to their phone screens. Everyone is eager to see who followed who on instagram and who tweeted what and how many friend requests they have gotten in one week alone.
You might find yourself in a family gathering of about 20 people and only three people seem to be in the present. Everyone else is in a virtual world which convinces the mind that it is the real deal. Therefore when you decide to also get ‘connected’ consider whether it is bringing you closer or further away from the people around you.
Does Technology Make You More or Less Productive?
The first thing most of us do in the morning before anything else is check our phones for messages or emails. This habit has been shown to cause the mind to work at a slower rate due to affected stimulation. When you go through your messages, you are most likely to find in them some good and bad news. In addition to this, there is always a set of demands waiting for you either from your boss a friend or family member. When you start your day on such a note, that you have so many things to do, the mind automatically becomes demotivated and you end up having a long and unproductive day. It is very important to take some alone time first thing in the morning to do personal things such as meditation or prayer or whatever else you do for self-care. Once you do this you create a better stimulation for your brain which will thereafter have a positive attitude towards everything.
Does Technology Affect Your Social Life?
Like we said earlier, the internet has built a virtual world where people meet mentally. With every generation this has become the norm and people will only be friends if they are already connected to some social media platform. Some people do not even leave their houses anymore because their phones and computers provide them with all the interaction they need. While it is okay to get to know as many people from all around the world, one must realize that socialization can only be successful when people meet physically. Once you begin to see that relating with people is becoming a task due to your usage of technology, you should trace back your steps and make some changes.
Are You Hurting Yourself?
Are your eyes aching from staring on your computer’s screen all day? Do you have neck spasms from staying in one bent position while looking at your phone? Does your body lag due to lack of any physical activity or movement from the chair or couch you sat in since morning? Then it is time to make a change. Insert regular intervals of breaks in between your work sessions. It is good to do your work wholeheartedly and efficiently but it is also very important to take care of your body because without it you cannot really work. You can decide to take short strolls after two or three hours, or doing some work manually without using any machinery. This way you will be able to keep your body healthy and doing your work as required.
This is not to say that technology is a bad thing. No. far from it. Without technology you wouldn’t be able to access and read this post. However it is very important to realize that self-control is very important and you should avoid being overly dependent on it because too much of anything always has negative repercussions.
