6 Trampoline Safety Tips You Should Know
For many adults and children, jumping around on a trampoline can be a great source of fun and exercise. However, while this activity can be quite fun, it can also be potentially dangerous if precautions and common sense are not used along the way. Because of this, it is extremely important for anyone using a trampoline to take a variety of safety steps to ensure a fun activity does not lead to serious injuries or a needless tragedy. If you and your family are getting ready to set up a trampoline with the intention of having endless hours of fun, here are six trampoline safety tips you should always keep in mind.
Never Place a Trampoline Near Trees or Fences
When most families purchase a trampoline, they immediately choose to place it in their backyard. However, since most backyards contain trees and fencing, this can be a dangerous combination. Therefore, when deciding where to put your trampoline, always be sure to never place it near trees, fencing, poles, or anything that kids or adults on the trampoline could accidentally strike while jumping. For best results, always try to have at least a six-foot clear area around the outer edges of the trampoline.
Use Trampoline Safety Nets
If at all possible, use trampoline safety nets that are installed around the outer edges of the trampoline. Often 10 feet high or taller, these nets may either be included with a trampoline, or can be purchased separately. Along with catching someone if they accidentally jump too high, the nets will also keep jumpers from falling onto the ground or hitting the springs or frame.
Never Jump with Jewelry or Sharp Objects
For many kids who want to play on a trampoline, their first thought is to get on it and start playing as quickly as possible. However, before letting them begin, always make sure they are not wearing any jewelry, such as necklaces, or have any sharp objects in their pockets. This will make sure nothing can accidentally get caught on springs or the frame, and that no sharp objects can accidentally stab an unsuspecting person.
Resist the Urge To Do Somersaults
Unless the adults or children on the trampoline have taken trampoline classes to learn how to safely do somersaults or other maneuvers while jumping, resist the urge to show off for your friends and family. Instead, simply jump straight up and down at a steady pace. By doing so, various types of head and neck injuries can be avoided, as can other common trampoline injuries such as sprains and fractures to elbows, wrists, forearms, and collarbones.
Check the Trampoline’s Bolts and Springs
Before anyone ever attempts to get on a trampoline, make a safety check to ensure all bolts are tightened and springs are in their proper positions and securely hooked to the frame and trampoline mat. If anything is out of place, broken, or missing, do not allow anyone on the trampoline until the problem is fixed. Otherwise, the result may be a child or adult falling off the trampoline, landing awkwardly and injuring themselves, or falling through an unexpected hole and hitting their head against the trampoline frame. Rather than let this happen, take an extra five minutes before playtime to make sure everything is in place.
Place the Trampoline On Level Ground
If you want to make sure a serious trampoline accident occurs, place it on uneven ground. If you do, it’s a sure bet it will turn over at some point while someone is on it, resulting not only in a damaged trampoline, but a person or persons who will be seriously injured. To get the best results, always place your trampoline on level ground, preferably on soft grass, sand, or other areas that can be cushioning. Never place a trampoline on asphalt or concrete surfaces, and if you want an added safety precaution, purchase ground safety pads and place them around the outer edges of the trampoline.
