SXSW 2008

What? South by Southwest Interactive Festival
When? March 7-11, 2008
Where? Austin, Texas
Why? To hear some cool digital activism speakers with a music festival and film festival to keep you entertained

The South by Southwest Festival (also called SXSW) is a set of interactive, film, and music festivals and conferences that take place every spring in Austin, Texas. The interactive part is what interests us most, because “interactive” is code for “geekery.” Some of the interactive events this year should be very interesting to digital activists, so consider going if you live nearby. You could listen to talks on:

  • The Future of Volunteers: Where Did Everyone Go? (David Neff)
  • Pimp My Non Profit — Real Non-Profits Kicking Ass with Online Technology (Ed Schipul)
  • Social Network Coups: The Users are Revolting! (Annalee Newitz)
  • Africa 2.0: Affecting Change Using Technology (G. Kofi Annan)
  • Guerilla.com (Johannes Grenzfurthner)

According to the web site, “SXSW Interactive is a place where top thinkers talk about what they see as the newest trends in technology. Ideas first discussed at this event have developed into digital culture icons two or three years later. For example, many attendees say the term “weblog” was coined at the 1999 SXSW Interactive Festival. More recently, the social networking application, Twitter, reached it’s tipping point at SXSW 2007.”You can register here, but be warned, it costs $400!
