Tool: YouTube

Website: http://www.youtube.com
What it is: YouTube is a site where you can upload your digital video for all the world to see
Rating:
Applications for activists: A great way to publicize human rights abuses caught on video, like this case of prisoner abuse in Malaysia or this case of beaten protesters in Zimbabwe (image above).
Cost: Free
Available Languages: English, French, German, Chinese, Italian, Japanese, Spanish, Dutch, Polish, Russian, Turkish
You can figure it out in: 10 minutes
Why we like it: Free, easy to use, a great way to spread a visual message, works well with other online platforms (like blogs)
Some problems: Once you upload your video, YouTube technically owns it. Popular videos get overlaid with ads as part of YouTube’s business model
Steps for Use:
1. Create a YouTube account here.
2. Once you arrive at your new account homepage, click the gray “Upload New Video” button (see red arrow).
3. First you will be asked to fill in some information about the video.
4. On the next page, you will select a video file from your computer to upload.
5. After you click the “Upload Video” button on that page you may have to wait a while for the video to upload, depending on the speed of your Internet connection.
6. Once the video has uploaded, YouTube will automatically create a homepage for your video that looks like the image above.
7. Now tell people the web address of this page and then they can watch your video. You can also put the video in a blog by using the “embed code” in the gray box in the upper right-hand corner of the screen (see red arrow).
